Electrify Your Business with NEVI Funding and EV Range

Introducing NEVI: The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program

By Joe Glassmeyer, Site Acquisition Specialist

If you've been keeping up with the latest in electric vehicle news, you're likely familiar with NEVI – the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program. This initiative presents an exciting chance for businesses to enhance their EV infrastructure strategies.

NEVI is a key component of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), a significant legislative effort. This program sets aside a substantial $7.5 billion specifically for EV charging ventures. Among this allocation, $5 billion is earmarked for nationwide funding, while an additional $2.5 billion is expected to be allocated to corridor and community charging grants. NEVI stands as a catalyst for fostering fair access to electric vehicles, curbing transportation-related emissions, and advancing toward the federal objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Under the NEVI program, businesses can secure up to 80% of the necessary funding to incorporate DC Fast chargers into their facilities. With this generous level of financial support, businesses now have an opportunity to establish their own EV infrastructure.

NEVI Funding Requirements

While the NEVI program operates at the federal level, it's important to note that the application process and funding specifics can vary from state to state. For insights into your particular state's plan for EV charging and its utilization of federal funds, check out the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation's 2023 report, here.

In addition to any state-specific requirements, there are federal prerequisites that you'll need to fulfill in order to be eligible for NEVI funding. These include:

  • Charging Capacity: Your locations must be capable of simultaneously charging at least 4 vehicles at 150 kW each.

  • Proximity along Highways: Charging stations should be situated no more than 50 miles apart along freeways and highways, contributing to a well-distributed network.

  • Accessibility: Stations must be located within 1 mile of a freeway exit or highway roadway, ensuring ease of access for drivers.

  • Power Capacity: Locations must be able to accommodate the power demands of DC charging solutions.

  • Reliability: Each charging port is expected to maintain 97% uptime and remain operational and well-maintained for a minimum of five years.

  • Secure Payment: Charging sites must offer secure payment methods, such as card readers or tap-to-pay options.

These are just a few of the big ones, but for a more detailed list you can see the federal standard and requirements here.
